Frequently Asked Questions
DIVX and downloading
What is a DIVX download?
DIVX is a video format used by computers and other devices such as some DVD players. It has become very popular in recent years, primarily through file-sharing software. It is near-DVD quality, but the file sizes are much smaller - and therefore much more suited for downloading.
How can I watch divx movies?
There are several ways. The vast majority of modern macs and PCs can play divx in their normal video players. It is possible your media player may need a new codec, which can simply be downloaded for free from the divx website.
Watching on a computer is not always ideal of course. Instead, you may well also have a DVD or any other device able to play DIVX files - look for the DIVX or DIVX Ultra logo on the front or check your manual. These might be played from a CD ROM or DVD ROM that you can burn from your PC, Even neater, you may have a USB or media card slot - simply copy your downloaded file to your USB stick, SD card or similar.
As a final slightly more techie alternative, it is possible to download the divx file, and use software to convert it to DVD format. You can then burn a disc and play it anywhere!
Will it have Digital Rights Management (DRM?)
No.
How big is the file, and how long will it take to download?
The file is about 750mb for Sam Jackson’s Secret Video Diary, and 850mb for Beyond Fiction, and It depends on your internet connection and a few other variables as to how long it will take to download. In our experience, a good ADSL broadband connection can take as little as 15 minutes. We don't, however, recommend you use an old dial-up connection - it will take forever. Ask a friend on broadband to do it for you.
Payment
Can I REALLY get it for nothing if I want?
Yes.
Where does the money go?
Over 60% of all sales will go directly to us and therefore towards repaying the costs of the film. Getting the film made has obviously cost money, plus festival appearances etc. None of the cast or crew were paid. We are extremely unlikely to make enough money to make a profit over and above all the people that we owe, but we would like to at least partially pay them back for their hard work and goodwill! As for the rest of the films' revenue, music companies are on a percentage profit of the film (16%), 10% will go to Leukeamia Research and 10% to Missing People, both UK registered charities. Nothing whatsoever will go to middlemen. Power to the people and all that.
What about VAT?
Because we are such a small company (with such a small income), under UK law no VAT is payable.
Do I have to register my details and end up on some wretched marketing database?
No. We don't believe in that.
How do I pay? Is this secure? Will I have to pay an admin fee?
We use PayPal to process all payments securely - and you don't even need a PayPal account to pay if you have one of the major credit cards. PayPal are probably the biggest and most reputable online payment company today (you may well already use them on eBay). All transactions are carried out via secure SSL encryption. They will charge us a small fee, but we don't add this on to whatever amount you choose to pay. No VAT or credit card fees are added either.
I can't be bothered with downloads / can't play them / I want a box, dammit. Will the film be avaiable on DVD?
We certainly hope so - a DVD release will hopefully follow in 2008 with both films on the disc, plus commentaries, deleted scenes and all sorts of other good things.
What BBFC certificate is it? Is it suitable for children?
Because the film is currently for download only, no BBFC certificate is required. In our view, the film would be likely to get a 15 rating, due to language and adult themes.
