Beyond Fiction
Behind the scenes - Posy and Guy 1 small

The companion to Sam Jackson’s Secret Video Diary is Beyond Fiction: Posy Miller and the Story of Sam Jackson’s Secret Video Diary. This is a feature length real documentary (as opposed to Sam Jackson’s faux documentary style), which follows the Sam Jackson project right from its conception as a one-woman TV microdrama promo. It includes early conceptual screen tests with Mia Fothergill as Sam (who would eventually play Abi Wright in the final film), and the memorable audition process is fully captured, along with the euphoria of Posy’s eventual casting and filming.

Then, on Christmas Eve 2002, tragedy strikes.

The intensely painful aftermath is revealed in a dialogue between writer / director Guy Rowland and Misha Herwin, Posy Miller’s mother, who first met at Posy’s funeral. Their subsequent deep friendship and trust underscores what follows, as the idea emerges to turn Sam Jackson into a feature film, using the precious existing fragments.

The documentary then goes into the grueling filming proper with little resources beyond goodwill and passion, until the exhausted filmmakers end up two year’s later at the British Independent Film Awards.

Beyond Fiction is an intimate portrait of an extraordinary sequence of events, by turns funny and heartbreaking. It goes far beyond any conventional “making of” movie, with a universal human story of love and loss at its core. Most of all, it is a unique opportunity to meet Posy Miiler, the person, and discover why she inspired the impossible.
